What is contemporary American clog dancing?

American clog dancing took shape in the Appalachian Mountains in the 1700s. Despite the image it conjures for many people, it is very different from Dutch clogging (klompendanskunst). American clogging gets its name from the Gaelic word for time, a reference to using your feet to keep time to the music, generally emphasizing the downbeat. It has roots in Irish, English, German, African, and possibly Cherokee dances. It looks most similar to tap and Irish step dance. Any music genre can be used.

Typical clogging shoes are similar to tap shoes except we use special taps made out of two steel plates with rivets in the middle. This creates noise when the taps touch the ground and also when they click together. Taps are made to either be nailed or glued on, making it possible to clog in many styles of shoes.
